Hello! Welcome to Act(ing) Mindfully. I’m so glad you’re here and that you’re interested in exploring along with me.
So what’s this blog all about?
Being a performer is a rewarding, ever-changing and often challenging life choice. Beyond the everyday mental and physical rigor it requires of us to keep our skills in shape, it also demands a lot from us emotionally and energetically. Unlike many other careers, performing requires us to fully commit our whole selves to it: body, mind, emotions and spirit. It can be incredibly invigorating, but at the same time it can be incredibly draining. Many of us find ourselves caught in this constant flux of energy, unable to keep ourselves grounded both on and off stage (or camera).
But is it possible to be a great performer and live a balanced life?
That’s what we’ll explore here.
Who am I?
My name is Mairin Smit and I’m a theatre and movement artist, teacher and artist wellness coach. Artist wellness coach? Yes, I just added that title to my personal definition. Let me expand a bit more on that here.
My goal is to help artists, specifically performers, live a balanced and grounded life while still being able to give passionate, emotionally vibrant and totally embodied performances. Many of us have accepted that living an energetic and emotional rollercoaster ride is an unavoidable part of our job as performers. I believe there’s a different way to approach our work; a healthier, more balanced and more mindful approach. You can find out more about my ideas and the work that I do on my website, Five Winds.
And who are you?
Perhaps you’re a performer looking for ways to balance your life. Maybe you’ve had an experience while performing that has left you feeling unsettled and you’re looking to find a way to let go of it. Or maybe you’re just interested in learning more about energy; how to work with it, how it works with us and how it moves, affects and transforms us and the art we produce. Whatever has brought you here, I welcome you with open arms!
I’m excited to explore these ideas with you, to share practical tips and exercises to help you bring balance to your performing life, and to share in our passion for the art of performing.
Let’s keep talking. 🙂
Act(ing) Mindfully is a part of my work with Five Winds. It’s a space where I explore the connection between performance and energy, and offer tips and ideas on how to stay balanced and healthy (body, mind, emotions and spirit) while living the life of a performer.
